Shea-Ra Nichi
BIOGRAPHY Shea-Ra Nichi An accomplished dancer, director and choreographer, she has been performing professionally since age eight. Shea-Ra Nichi studied professional theatre in New York City. She has traveled to Haiti, Europe and Brazil researching and learning all forms of African cultural dance. She has worked with UNCW as their Resident Upperman Artist since the fall of 2005. Through combining all forms of folkloric African dance such as Haitian, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Brazilian, which shows the connections between these cultures. Shea-Ra has developed a new technique, the first to ever combine these forms of dance in this way. “Since the year of 2003 my determination has been to travel to various regions around the world, with the hope to continue the work of great legends such as Pearl Primus and Katherine Dunham. Since that time my travels have included Haiti, The Caribbean, and Bahia- Brazil, with future travels to Cuba and beyond to other regions of interest. This is the most important part of the work. Through these efforts I’m able to come back to this region and share my studies. The goal is to unity a global community locally.” About the performance The Seed Inner life- Is a solo dance performance. The pieces expresses the internal life of a seed in its dormant state and the unlimited possibilities. The dance is expressed through the rhythm of the breath. This piece is just one segment of the first 15 minutes of “The Journey Forward- Seed Conception”. The Journey Forward- Launching the new dance technique of Shea-Ra Nichi – the “Nichi Technique” Premiers October 26th at Cameron Art Museum. The Journey Forward is a production that will feature the Nichi Technique – a technique of emotional expressions through Afro-Movements which draws on the Congo, Haitian, Brazilian, and Cuban influences in its vibrant program of dance, spoken word, and songs. The story told through the Journey forward is the story of the cycles of life. Expressing through the technique, the process, emotion and drama as it unfolds in life in general. These four stages are Seed-Conception, Birth- New Beginnings, Transition- Coming of age, and Flowering- Divine opening. About the workshop The Nichi Technique – a technique of emotional expressions through Afro-Movements which draws on the folkloric dance of Congo, Haitian, Brazilian, and Cuban influences it is a culmination of all the African Diaspora dance forms that has been presented in the works of Shea-Ra Nichi in the past years which has now come together. Workshop Through this workshop we will show that anyone can express their life experiences through movement. Shea-Ra will invite 15 members of community to participate in the journey of self exploration and through this workshop explore their individual unique stories and what they would like to share through sound; words and movements based on our lives, love and struggles as people.
